There are many reasons why people choose to volunteer. Here are just a few:
- the satisfaction of doing something worthwhile in the community
- to gain work experience
- to meet some new people
- to build your confidence
- to give structure to your day
- to learn new skills or make use of the skills you already have
- to do something completely different
- to feel valued
Although voluntary work is unpaid, it shouldn't cost you anything to volunteer as most organisations will cover expenses such as travel costs. Some organisations also offer accredited training free of charge. If you are receiving any state benefit such as income support or incapacity benefit, this will not normally be affected by your voluntary work. However, we do advise you to keep the Benefits Agency informed about any voluntary work you undertake.
